Diet, as a word can be defined as the amount of food consumed by a person or organism. In other words, diet can be considered as synonym of nutrition. Diet from its other meaning, also means a restricted regime of eating which is followed for weight loss and medical obligations.

When talking about diet, dietary habits can't be left behind. Dietary habits in their actual sense mean as the habitual decisions took by a group of people regarding their choice of food to eat. Speaking of dietary habits, it becomes more than obvious to mention the fact that they play vital role in health and mortality. Diet can be classified or can be distinguished based on many factors like tradition, culture, region and religion.

Traditional diet describes about the dietary habits being practiced by a group people in accordance with their traditions and customs for years together. It includes even the dietary habits marked by region and cultures too, though in a broad sense. Even religious beliefs sometimes might force people to follow a particular diet. Recent studies show that diet is an index of a person's longevity. In addition to the above mentioned factors, individual dietary habits vary based on other factors such as economic conditions, weather conditions and availability of food products.

In medieval times, most important factor in a person's diet was availability, animal migrations and growing seasons were the factors for diet variations. But in present times, diets have been greatly affected by technological advancements such as refrigeration, faster transportation, and newer farming techniques etc; resulting in regular availability of all kinds of foods throughout the year. This results in a varied diet.

Diets vary across the world. Depending on the climate and landscapes, diets vary from starchy food to meats with spices to wheat and its products. Even the type of work a person does affects the type of diet being adopted. Diet though may also be classified as vegetarian and non-vegetarian based on the contents of it. Vegetarians may be defined as a combined category of vegans and lacto vegetarians. Vegans are the ones who abstain from consuming milk and its products. In general vegetarian diet consists of fruits and vegetables whereas non-vegetarian diet is a broader category consisting of meats of various types in addition to vegetarian diet.

Due to increased consciousness about health and fitness among the population in present times, the meaning of diet has been totally inclined to only one of its two meanings. This resulted in making diet mean only a strict regime for losing weight, overshadowing the fact that there is more to diet than just that.
