1 - Not Having A Weight Loss Goal - You probably know you need to lose weight but how much, as the saying goes 'Fail to plan, plan to fail.'
Having a goal is one of the first steps to losing weight successfully, because if you don't have a goal how do you know if you've achieved it?
Being vague like...'I need to lose a few pounds'...isn't gonna work...how much is a couple of pounds, and how will you know if you've achieved your goal???
Get a pen and paper, and write down a figure of what you're aiming for. Don't make the mistake of picking a huge goal with massive weight loss, start on the first 5-10 pounds and then take it from there.
2 - Expecting To Change Habits Overnight - Most people assume that suddenly when the clock strikes 12 on New Years eve they're going to change in every way!
'I'll never eat candy again....I'll exercise 7 days a week...I'll exercise rain or shine...I'll eat a better diet with more fruit and veg'
Be honest, how long to do think thats gonna last?
Make your resolution to start small this year things like....'I won't eat healthy for the full day I'll just eat a healthy diet till lunch time.....OR...I'll exercise 2-3 days per week....OR I'll trade soft drinks for green tea or water'
Make small changes and then stick to them like glue, remember habits weren't born overnight and they won't go away overnight!
3 - Not Recording What You Eat - How many of you have every recorded how much you eat on a typical day? You may be shocked at how much passes your lips that never registers with your brain.
So, get a diary/note pad and record you're daily eating habits. You're probably thinking 'Thats too much hard work I'll skip this tip'...but believe me its no way as hard as knocking those pounds of fat off your body. In research people that have used food diary's lost twice as much as people that didn't,...enough said.
4 - Treating Food As An Enemy - Some women have a bad experience with a man and suddenly they treat all men the same, 'They've hurt me in the past so they're all bad!'
You may laugh at that, but most dieters treat food the same...'I got fat from food so all food is bad!' Then they skip meals, eat tiny portions of food and expect to be happy and lose weight at the same time...its not gonna happen. Remember food can make you better but it also can make you sicker (fatter), so pick the right kinds of foods and eat more of them.
And if you still feel going for a bit of food from 'the wrong side of the town' have some just don't stay around that side of town for too long!:)
5 - Going It Alone - How many of you started a diet alone last year? Losing weight can be hard and not having a buddy with you, usually means that you'll probably throw in the towel at the first sign of trouble or discomfort.
If you take a look at any of the successful weight loss organizations (weight watchers as an example) group meetings and having other people to talk with with you goes along way to there success. So find a group of like minded people and work together to losing weight, you could always have a competition with each other as an added incentive.
6 - Going On A Diet With Friends - Just like having a group to help you with losing weight, picking the wrong people can also hamper your success.
You probably know people that join you on a diet every year only to drop out after a few days, while they may be the best of friends they can intentionally or not sabotage your efforts as well. We all know people that need to lose weight but would rather moan about it than take action, they're not the people you need...drop them and go it alone you'll probably end up being more successful instead.
7 - Not Going On A Diet On Jan 1st - Although the first of January probably isn't the right date for you to start a diet, when are you going to lose those extra pounds?? You don't need to wait until then to make changes, you could start right now today and gradually build up momentum on the first of January.
Even if you've failed to keep to a diet for more than a few days in January, just remember even people who've lost huge amounts of weight struggled and failed over and over again. But they kept at it, seen where they went wrong, learned from their mistakes and moved on.
And that's what you need to do, try to remember where you went wrong with all those New Year resolutions of the past, was it any of the reasons that I've written about here?
If so you'll be more prepared this year than others, and even if you fail again you've now got another mistake to add to your list...then dust yourself down move on and jump back on again.
Best of luck!!
